Autumn Leaves - Jazz piano trio
Go to www.youtube.com for a much improved version in HD and Widescreen. Another experiment - this time, I took a jazz trio midi file that I had previously done, and annotated with text comments. Lots of students learn 'Autumn Leaves' as one of the first standards they play, so I thought that this might be a useful source of ideas. It is in the fake book key, and the chord symbols appear above the music. This was imported into the Band in a Box program - this program will read these text 'markers', and it also has quite a flexible notation view. Note that in the notation view the bass and treble clefs don't accurately reflect the Left and Right hand parts. In addition, for those who can't easily sight read music, there is a very big and clear Piano view. I hope that some students might find this useful. I have produced lots of other jazz midi files at home.wanadoo.nl that can be treated in a similar way. My Foolish Heart - Jazz piano lesson - stereo?
My Foolish Heart - Jazz piano solo and trio. Another experiment to see if I could achieve a stereo audio track, and still not sacrifice too much video quality. The text and notation can be seen, though less clear than I would have hoped. This was derived from a midi file that I had recorded and annotated some time ago. I was hoping to create, when the bass and drums enter, the sort of interplay that the Bill Evans trio was famous for. Of course this is a very pale emulation of this 'collective improvisation' style, but is fun to try - even if there is only one player of all the instruments! The leadsheet in this key is in the old Real Book Page 49 as 'Black Orpheus' With this I wanted to get that loose sort of latin feel, with the bass and drums playing more freely than the typical repeating 2 bar pattern on drums, or the constant and predictable root and 5th style on bass. 'Spain' (Chick Corea) - jazz piano lesson
'Spain' (Chick Corea) - jazz piano lesson. I did this about 7 years ago, and it has been kicking around the web since then. I recorded the bass and drum tracks first, and improvised the piano part later. I tried another method of annotating, using a 'spotlight' effect to highlight the section of music being referred to in the text. Again, the audio on this video has been spoilt - on the first solo section, there is severe 'clipping' that causes distortion at the loudest levels. And when the bass and drums enter there is a curious loud / soft 'pumping' in the volume levels. It is worse when using the 'High quality' option youtube.com and you need this to see the notes and annotations clearly. The solution is to go to my web site www.bushgrafts.com and download an excellent quality video from there - and the 'backing track' I did - bass and drums - to play along with (they are free!)

This has been one of my most 'hit on' videos (over 73 thousand views), so I thought that I would continue to experiment with ways of better communicating via video. Most people have said that the view of fingers on the keys is best to see what is happening. I have added a computer generated Piano view just above my fingers. Another test for the Windows Movie Maker split screen effect. Jazz singer Michelle Benjamin sings the not-often-played ballad by Johnny Mandel and Dave Frishberg - 'You Are There' It is one of my favourite things to do - it is a challenge because it depends on each being able to instantly respond to the other. My favourites are Bill Evans with Tony Bennett, Fred Hersch (with quite a few different vocalists) and John Taylor (with Norma Winstone).

'Embraceable You' - solo jazz piano

This is 3 play-throughs of this Gershwin song improvised from the basic leadsheet- played very straight, with a variety of harmonies, and styles. Unfortunately some of the comments are unreadable so for anyone interested, this video, with clearer text, and the midi file recorded as this was video-ed are at my homepage at web.newsguy.com Play the midi file in a suitable program (the free Vanbasco's Karaoke player for example) to slow things down or see more clearly the notes being played on a keyboard.

Stella By Starlight (reharmonised) Jazz piano tutorial
Stella By Starlight (reharmonised). Loosely based on a reharmonised lead sheet by Andy Laverne that I saw in an old Keyboard Magazine. It is just one play through of the song. I tried to make it as simple to play as I could. There are several other versions on Youtube by Lot2learn and 7notemode that are excellent. Watch it here in higher quality youtube.com or go to my website for a fully downloadable version. The transcription is on my DVD - details are on my website. This was played in free time, and I had to adjust the measures to suit the 32 bar scheme known by most pianists who play the tune. This is difficult sometimes to get an accurate repesentation of what was played.

The Song Is You - Jazz piano Trio
Yet another experiment - this time, I took another jazz trio midi file that I had previously done, and annotated with text comments. This was imported into the Band in a Box program - this program will read these text 'markers', and it also has quite a flexible notation view. Note that in the notation view the bass and treble clefs don't accurately reflect the Left and Right hand parts. In addition, for those who can't easily sight read music, there is a very big and clear Piano view. I changed some of the settings in Band in a Box, and I think got a more accurate notation display.I hope that some students might find this useful. I have produced lots of other jazz midi files at home.wanadoo.nl that can be treated in a similar way. 'Armando's Rhumba' - Jazz piano duet
An experiment to see if I could have a split screen with two independent tracks synced together. I played each track in each several times (recording both video and audio as a midi track) alternately trying to respond to the playing on the other track. Unfortunately, Youtube seems to have mucked up the sync, especially on the accompaniment screen. There is better downloadable video (in sync) and a midi file with both tracks separate at my site at web.newsguy.com You are welcome to replace one of the tracks with your playing making a true duet.
