Autumn Leaves - Jazz piano trio
Go to www.youtube.com for a much improved version in HD and Widescreen. Another experiment - this time, I took a jazz trio midi file that I had previously done, and annotated with text comments. Lots of students learn 'Autumn Leaves' as one of the first standards they play, so I thought that this might be a useful source of ideas. It is in the fake book key, and the chord symbols appear above the music. This was imported into the Band in a Box program - this program will read these text 'markers', and it also has quite a flexible notation view. Note that in the notation view the bass and treble clefs don't accurately reflect the Left and Right hand parts. In addition, for those who can't easily sight read music, there is a very big and clear Piano view. I hope that some students might find this useful. I have produced lots of other jazz midi files at www.bushgrafts.com that can be treated in a similar way. 'Spain' (Chick Corea) - jazz piano lesson
'Spain' (Chick Corea) - jazz piano lesson. I did this about 7 years ago, and it has been kicking around the web since then. I recorded the bass and drum tracks first, and improvised the piano part later. I tried another method of annotating, using a 'spotlight' effect to highlight the section of music being referred to in the text. Again, the audio on this video has been spoilt - on the first solo section, there is severe 'clipping' that causes distortion at the loudest levels. And when the bass and drums enter there is a curious loud / soft 'pumping' in the volume levels. It is worse when using the 'High quality' option youtube.com and you need this to see the notes and annotations clearly. The solution is to go to my web site www.bushgrafts.com and download an excellent quality video from there - and the 'backing track' I did - bass and drums - to play along with (they are free!)

My Foolish Heart - Jazz piano lesson - stereo?
My Foolish Heart - Jazz piano solo and trio. Another experiment to see if I could achieve a stereo audio track, and still not sacrifice too much video quality. The text and notation can be seen, though less clear than I would have hoped. This was derived from a midi file that I had recorded and annotated some time ago. I was hoping to create, when the bass and drums enter, the sort of interplay that the Bill Evans trio was famous for. Of course this is a very pale emulation of this 'collective improvisation' style, but is fun to try - even if there is only one player of all the instruments! The leadsheet in this key is in the old Real Book Page 49 as 'Black Orpheus' With this I wanted to get that loose sort of latin feel, with the bass and drums playing more freely than the typical repeating 2 bar pattern on drums, or the constant and predictable root and 5th style on bass. Pardon me for another recycled video! This has been one of my most 'hit on' videos (over 73 thousand views), so I thought that I would continue to experiment with ways of better communicating via video. Most people have said that the view of fingers on the keys is best to see what is happening. I have added a computer generated Piano view just above my fingers. You will notice that the computer gets the hand split wrong at times. I have also put a transcription up at web.newsguy.com and also the midi file. Its harmony works in much the same way as Autumn Leaves - which is often the first tune tackled by pianists new to jazz. And there are lots of re-harmonisation possibilities. My Romance - jazz piano Lesson. This is another re-cycled midi file done some time ago. After the solo first chorus, I tried to get the 'collective improvisation' feel with bass, drums and piano responding to each other - even though I was playing all parts - this involving re-recording each part several times. I was hoping for a High Definition video here, as it is difficult to read the notation without it. 'Time After Time' - jazz piano lesson
This is a great standard to play on - I played the first chorus freely as solo piano - as Keith Jarrett does on his 'Keith Jarrett at the Blue Note' CD, modulating from the written key (C) up to Eb, and then back again to C as the bass and drums begin. On the trio choruses, I was thinking more of the Oscar Peterson approach - using lots of blues influenced licks which, despite not being a 12 bar blues seem to work well over this song. This is quite a challenging song to play - Bill Evans' versions, including the one with Tony Bennett are brilliant. Like other videos I have done recently, this includes a scrolling notation view, as well as clear views of the keyboard. It is intended as a lesson, so I perhaps have gone a bit 'over the top' crowding in a lot of things to illustrate different techniques! 'Cry Me a River' - HD enhanced - Jazz piano Lesson. One of my most viewed videos (79000 views), was this solo piano version of 'Cry Me a River'. It was one of my earliest efforts in producing these instructional videos - and then, both my computer assisted transcribing and video production skills were fairly basic. Now that I can place these on Youtube (and on my website and DVD) in High Definition, I thought that it would be useful to revamp this video. I have completely recast the transcription, making it more playable, accurate and easier to read. And I have added a big keyboard view so that it is clear which notes are being played. I have also added some more annotations.

'Maiden Voyage' - jazz piano lesson. You will probably need to view this in high quality to see the transcription - youtube.com A very clear copy of the video, and the annotated midi file, with LH and RH bass/treble split, is available (free) on my website at www.bushgrafts.com This was one of the first compositions that required 'modal' playing - it had sections in 4 key centres - each 4 measures long before changing key. Usually the chord quality for each is a dominant 7th with suspended 4th (D7sus,F7sus, Eb7sus, Db7sus) and unusually (for its time) the suspended chords were not resolved in the usual way. At the start, , I used another chord quality on each 4 bar key centre - using Major 7th #5 chords instead.

'Serenata' - Latin jazz piano lesson in HD
If you can manage HD mode, try this in full screen mode - it is very clear!. Most of my instructional videos have been either solo piano, or videos using my own backing tracks. This is a little different as I use a computer generated bass and drum track - one produced by PgMusic's amazing 'Real Tracks' feature. The backing on this track was created in Pg music's great program 'Band in a Box' using their 'Real Tracks' feature.(www.pgmusic.com). I simply typed the chords in, pushed record, and played in the 3 choruses of the song on my midi keyboard. I actually recorded the audio on my iriver MP3 player (which does line-in recording) as I played the song from a leadsheet (backing tracks from Realtracks and piano sound from my Yamaha P-250 piano). Band in a Box simultaneously recorded the piano improvisation as midi data in real time.
