You might be able to hear the effects described in this video when you turn up the volume of your speakers. When two notes sound together, if heard loudly their difference will always be perceived as an additional note. This can be concordant or discordant, but in the standard way in which instruments are tuned, equal temperament, these notes are normally discordant. Here we hear a piano tuned to the Kellner Bach tuning. Violinists hear the beat frequencies as "Tartini notes" and use them to assist perfect tuning. They are part of how we perceive harmony and music, and show up differences in temperament used to tune keyboard instruments. Here we see how Chopin used the effect of an unequal temperament to add to the emotion of his composition with the disconcerting effect of alternating certainty with uncertainty, as well as using the beating chord to sound like a bell tolling. Chopin was using the frequencies and harmomics of a piano as a synthesiser to put together notes that sound like something else. This is like the sound of the Cornet stop on Baroque organs which sounds like the oboe

Effect of Unequal Temperament on piano and instrument resonance and sonority of keys
This demonstration shows how an instrument tuned to Unequal Temperament responds differently in different keys. Pure intervals in the "good" keys resonate with harmonics of lower notes and how there is no resonance for keys in which the notes are not tuned to the harmonics. Such keys will be "empty" of harmonic content, "root"less as I call them, without harmonic root and certainly Liszt used B major in such a manner. One might possibly use the phrase "harmonic accordance" to describe what is going on . . . In equal temperament, none of the notes are on harmonic resonances so any resonating harmonics will either be shortened or will produce beating effects. Worse, they will be all the same in all keys!

Concerto for Piano Tuner and Orchestra composed by Roy E. Howard The piano tuner holds a unique role in society: to bring harmony to discord. The tuner usually works quite alone, raising the pitch and making exquisitely fine adjustments to hundreds of tuning pins, hammers, keys, and other action parts. Imagine what the world could be like if his dedication and integrity were copied by others. In this fanciful composition, the orchestra is inspired by the tuner's efforts, and joins in the struggle to resolve conflict. 1. Setting the Temperament. 0:00 to 1:38. The piece begins with a single note played by the flute: C above middle C. The tuner uses this as a standard to bring the piano up in pitch one whole note. The temperament octave is set and checked with descending thirds, all in the first one minute and 38 seconds. 2. Raising the treble octaves. From 1:38 to 2:21 the tuner raises the pitch of the treble octaves. The orchestra glissando effect represents raising the pitch one whole step for each of the 88 notes in the scale. Since each beat is a half step from the last, the orchestra is challenged to create a unique melody and harmonic progression. 3. Raising the bass section. 2:21 to 2:53. The bass section is raised, with equivalent low notes played by the brass section. 4. Tuning the unisons. 2:53 to 3:41. Case Study: Piano Tuner
Aural piano tuning is the art of making adjustments to the tensions in the strings of a piano so that the instrument is in tune. The meaning of the term in tune in the context of piano tuning is not as straightforward as it might seem, as it does not refer to the assignment of particular fixed set of pitches as it may with other instruments. Fine piano tuning requires an assessment of the interaction between notes, which is different for every piano, thus in practice requiring slightly different pitches from any theoretical standard. Pianos are usually tuned to a modified version of the system called equal temperament (see Piano key frequencies for the theoretical piano tuning). In all systems of tuning, every pitch may be derived from its relationship to a chosen fixed pitch. In the case of piano tuning, A440 is the usual standard. Piano tuning is distinct from repairs or other maintenance that may be carried out (eg regulation of the action). There are typically about 220 strings in a full-sized piano, which may have a combined tension of about 20 tonnes. Tuning involves making minute adjustments to the tensions of these strings, in order to properly align the intervals between their tones. Research by Bradley Lehman, 2004, continuing a doctoral project from 1993-4 in "modified meantone" tuning as applied to Bach's music. Testing Chopin study in A flat op 25 no 1 on modern piano in historic temperament
This recording of the study in A flat is particularly interesting as it tests how well a modern piano can perform tuned to a historic temperament, an unequal tuning or Good Temperament in the spirit of the well tempered keyboard. Here in A flat we have one of the keys which had been completely unplayable in Meantone tuning which is why Bach's "Good Temperament" had such an important influence over the next two centuries of music. This recording proves how Equal Temperament was not required to enable performers to play in all keys.

Chopin Nocturne Opus 9 No 2
The pianist wanted to play at this venue because the instrument has been tuned to an Unequal Temperament. Of course the action of an antique piano cannot do justice to the abilities of pianistic control of a pianist of this standard, who is frequently compared to Moiseiwitsch at his best. The concert received a standing ovation and one member of the audience commented that it had been more exquisite than his experience of Moiseiwitsch. I was asked to tune this Bechstein, made just before 1900, for this recital inaugurating concerts at Emerson Village, Forest Row. The tuning is an unequal temperament in which notes are not spaced mechanically equally and the result is that each musical key has a different character. Chords stand out as in 3 dimensions and suddenly music has a new colour. This is especially evident in the 3rd and 4th movements of Chopin's 2nd Sonata. The bass strings are harmonically tuned specifically to bring out a certain tonality of the instrument and to work hand in hand with the temperament. Equal temperament, with its mechanical unfeeling equal spacing of notes across the keyboard should be contrary to anthroposophical philosophy and principles and it was a pleasure to be asked to introduce this tuning whhich I have used for many years at Hammerwood Park to the Emerson community.

Bach vs Equal Temperament, part 1 -- Bradley Lehman
PART 1 OF 2. Five preludes from book 1 of Bach's "Well-Tempered Clavier" are performed on harpsichord, twice each. Part 1 of the video presentation has the preludes in B major, C major, and E major. Part 2 has the preludes in F minor and E-flat minor. The first performance of each pair is in equal temperament, and the second is in the "Bach/Lehman 1722" which I believe to have been Bach's own practice for this book of music. (Details: see www.larips.com ) The performances are by Bradley Lehman, May 31 2005. Same instrument, same camera, same day, trying to play as similarly as possible. All of the equal-temperament "takes" were recorded first, then the instrument retuned, and then all of the Bach-temperament takes. My own impression, hearing these 2 1 years later and editing them together into this presentation: the Bach temperament sounds enough like equal to fool just about anybody, and yet...it brings both more intensity and more relaxation to the music. In any event, it encourages me as a player to bend the music more freely and naturally, investing it with more nuances, in reaction to the sound. It makes me listen more closely to melody and counterpoint, the way the musical lines interact with one another. Tonality "locks in" with a subtly different character and mood for every key (scale). Equal temperament, by contrast, goes on and on with a relatively bland inoffensiveness...being less than inspiring, and encouraging "run-on" uninflected performances. The ...

Chopin 2nd Sonata 3rd & 4th Movements - Funeral March and Wind whistling over graves
The pianist wanted to play at this venue because the instrument has been tuned to an Unequal Temperament. It was this Sonata played in Equal Temperament by Lady Rose Cholmondley in the 1990s that gave me the hint that Chopin was composing for an unequal temperament and I have since tuned the piano for concerts at Hammerwood Park in an unequal temperament and now at Emerson. It brings out the emotion of the piece in an indescribably way, akin to having watched Black and White television suddenly only to discover colour. This is particularly audible in this the 3rd movement of the 2nd Sonata, the Funeral March followed by the desolation of the wind whistling over the graves. Of course the action of an antique piano cannot do justice to the abilities of pianistic control of a pianist of this standard, who is frequently compared to Moiseiwitsch at his best.
